Derivatives: - κατήφεια, ep. ion. -είη `being downcast etc.' (Il., Th.). κατηφέω (E., Arist.), aor. -ῆσαι `be downcast, be ashamed etc.' (Il.); κατηφής a backformation? (Szemerényi Glotta 33, 244 hesitating). By-forms : κατηφόνες = κατηφέες (Ω 253; see Schwyzer 487, Chantraine Formation 160); κατηφιάω = κατηφέω (A. R., AP, Plu.), after the verbs in -ιάω.
Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]X [probably]
Etymology: Uncertain. Acc. to Schwyzer Mél. de Saussure 247ff. as `having the view downwards' to ἁφή, ἅπτω (against this Kretschmer Glotta 5, 309). Diff., not better, Prellwitz KZ 44, 123f., Glotta 19, 126, Fick KZ 45, 56f. (thus Bechtel Lex. s. v.), Pisani Rend. Acc. Lincei 4-5 (1929) 4. - Blanc, Mél. ...Taillardat, 1988, 33-48 and BAGB 1996, 11f., connects θάμβος etc. and assumes *κατα-τηφής `completely stupefied'; but one would rather expect *-θηπης.
